Demo Submission Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in April Avenue Music. If you are considering submitting a demo of your recording to us, we ask that you carefully follow these guidelines:

  1. Before submitting your demo, please look over the recordings listed on this web site, to be sure that your recording is suitable for our market. Presently, we sell adult contemporary, Broadway & movie themes, light classical, light jazz, Celtic, relaxation, and new age music.

  2. If you are sending a demo from outside Canada, please send it by mail only. Include a statement on the outside of your package like this: "This package contains 4 CDs, provided as commercial samples free of charge, but valued for Customs @ $0.50 each. Total value: $2.00" (This assumes you are sending 4 different CDs.) The value for customs must not be zero, but also must not exceed ten dollars. If your CDs are made in the USA, please mark "Made in the USA. Eligible for NAFTA treatment." Similarly for CDs made in any NAFTA country including Canada, USA and Mexico. If you do not follow this guideline and we are required as a result to pay import duty or brokerage, we may refuse your package. This policy has become necessary in order to contain costs associated with our receiving large numbers of unsolicited demos.

(Here is the logic behind customs valuations: If you were shipping us a CD and charging us $15 for it, you would be correct in claiming $15 as the value for customs. However, if you are sending a CD demo free of charge, Canada Customs will not accept a value of $0.00. Therefore, you should claim your cost on the CD or CDR, which typically might be something like $0.50 or $1.00. In any case, please limit your demo shipment so that the total customs value you claim does not exceed $10.)

Note: Please send only 1 CD of each album. Do NOT send multiple copies of the same album.

  3. Please be sure to include your full name, address, and phone number so that we can contact you. Please do NOT phone us. Due to time limitations, we do not accept telephone inquiries regarding demo submissions. If you would like to receive confirmation that we received your demo, and possibly some comments regarding suitability, please provide your email address with your package. Otherwise, we will contact you only if we are interested in your recording. Please also note that in order to contain processing and mailing costs, we do not return demos. We do listen to at least a portion of each demo we receive. After we have listened to your demo, it may be kept on file for reference, or it may be destroyed. Even if we are not interested in the immediate term, we may call you at some future date if we believe an opportunity has arisen for your kind of music.

  4. Please do NOT pack your demo in an envelope padded with shredded recycled material. These envelopes are often damaged in the mail, and the demos get covered in a fine dust which is harmful to CD and cassette players. Demos received in this condition require careful cleaning before being played. We cannot guarantee that your demo will receive an audition if we receive it covered in dust. Therefore, please use some other recycled or recyclable packing materials. Rest assured that we do recycle all packing material received.
